Friday newsletters always feature travel conteststips, or news.

Today: One&Only Kea Island, Greece, is now open

Just a 30-minute boat ride from Athens, Kéa Island is the Cyclades best-kept secret. With a permanent population of around 2,300 residents, this untouched gem is a favorite weekend getaway for Athenians, and the captivating location of ultraluxe One&Only Kéa Island, one of the most anticipated hotel openings of 2024.

Perched above a protected cove on the beautifully rugged west coast, One&Only Kéa Island promises discretion, seclusion, and authentic Aegean living in its purest form. The second Greek resort for the ultra-luxury brand, it follows the successful opening of One&Only Aesthesis on the Athenian Riviera in November 2023. With direct speedboat transfers available between the two resorts, they will form a bucket-list itinerary for the upcoming European summer.

An exceptional all-villa resort and exclusive community of Private Homes, One&Only Kéa Island invites romantics, wellness seekers and city dwellers to connect with the revitalising effects of the Mediterranean lifestyle. Guests can savor local, seasonal ingredients in the airy restaurants and bars, and explore Kéa’s natural and cultural wonders via curated experiences. Grounded in the elements, the One&Only Spa is a holistic haven offering exclusive wellbeing rituals and immersive programmes crafted by Subtle Energies.

To drive the opening, One&Only has appointed Jerome Colson as General Manager. Drawing on over 20 years’ hospitality experience and more than 10 years with the brand, Colson brings unrivalled passion and expertise to the fore. “I am thrilled to be leading the opening of this extraordinary resort. There is something very special about Kéa, and we are committed to honouring that in a way that is true to the island and its people. From our curated experiences and world-class diving opportunities to the vibrant local cuisine, the resort is a celebration of the Aegean lifestyle and Kéa’s authentic agrarian roots.”

Accommodation

Designed by acclaimed architect John Heah, the resort’s 63 cliffside villas have been arranged to maximise privacy, while showcasing panoramic views over Kéa’s dramatic landscapes and the Aegean Sea. Offering a choice of one or two bedrooms, these contemporary retreats feature locally sourced white marble, curved atriums, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing endless sea views. The light-filled interiors flow to outdoor terraces, where private infinity pools and fireplaces promise elevated alfresco living.

Crafted for families or groups of friends, the Two-Bedroom Cliff Villas can accommodate up to four adults and two children. Exceptional features include two marble-clad ensuites, a kitchenette for in-villa entertaining, and a dining area on the sun-bathed terrace.

On the opposite side of the bay is a limited collection of 40 One&Only Private Homes, now available to purchase. Inspired by modern Greek design, these exclusive freehold villas offer a choice of one to six bedrooms, with layouts spanning 180–3,020 square metres. Set on plots of land measuring up to 7,130 square metres, they offer seamless indoor-outdoor living, with gardens, dining terraces, and cliffside swimming pools surrounded by sunken daybeds. One&Only Private Homeowners enjoy exceptional privileges, including exclusive benefits at Kerzner properties worldwide and access to the resort facilities right on their doorstep.

Restaurants & bars

One of the most fertile islands in the Cyclades, Kéa’s agrarian roots stretch back thousands of years. Drawing inspiration from these rich culinary traditions, the resort’s restaurants and bars showcase seasonal ingredients and local producers. Echoing the lively ambience of an authentic village piazza, Atria promises flavourful Greek cuisine in a convivial atmosphere, served within the airy dining room or on the sea-view terrace.

By day, Kosmos lobby bar welcomes guests for elevated Afternoon Tea with a Greek twist; as night falls, it is the place to be for sunset drinks under the vast open skylight. Overlooking the resort’s mirage-like main pool and the shimmering Aegean Sea, Kaiki serves relaxed bites and drinks throughout the day. Èpicora wine bar is a sophisticated setting for artisanal cheeses, local charcuterie, and an array of Greek and international wines, with intimate tastings led by the sommelier.

Hidden behind a secret door and with seating for just 20 guests, dark and discrete Incognito is a Cuban-accented speakeasy bar that boasts a collection of rare whiskies and rums, refined cocktails, and a humidor of vintage cigars.

Wellness and recreation

Creating an unrivalled wellness destination in the Cyclades, the resort will also be home to an exceptional newOne&Only Spa. In partnership with Subtle Energies, the three-storey spa is rooted in the notion of sophrosyne (sof-ros-i-nee), the ancient Greek expression for balancing mind and body. The seafront sanctuary will offer signature treatments crafted exclusively for One&Only Kéa Island, inspired by Greek mythology and the healing benefits of natural active ingredients. The wellness retreat will also offer intensive programmes designed to reset and re-energise, rejuvenating beauty rituals grounded in the Aegean elements of earth and water, an indoor-outdoor fitness centre, a sea-view yoga pavilion, and watsu therapy.

Nearby, the cliffside Club Oneoffers inspiring activities for all ages with tennis and padel courts, bicycles and a dedicated teens’ area, complete with a half-size basketball court. For junior travellers, KidsOnly promises a fascinating programme of creative classes and outdoor activities inspired by Kéa’s iconic shipwrecks. Little ones aged four to 12 can engage with the treasures of the deep via storytelling, scavenger hunts, and enlightening experiences that focus on sustainability and the island’s unique flora and fauna.

Authentic Island Experiences

The resort’s experiences celebrate the natural and cultural wonders of Kéa, with bespoke adventures across land and sea. As the closest Cycladic island to Athens, Kéa’s waters are a magnet for yachts in the region. Situated on the resort’s tranquil bay, Bond Beach Club brings unrivalled glamour and energy to the island, with a star-studded calendar of guest DJs, a vibrant menu of locally sourced ingredients, elevated cocktails, and one-of-a-kind culinary experiences on the water’s edge.

Just offshore, some of the Mediterranean’s most renowned diving sites await. Experienced technical divers can follow the resort’s expert team to four historic wrecks and protected marine parks that surround Kéa, while beginners can master the craft of scuba diving in the calm waters of the bay. Above the waves, sail to one of the island’s spectacular secluded beaches, accessible only by boat.

Guests can also delve into the culture and history of Kéa with lively Panigiri celebrations at the resort, archaeology sessions within the grounds, cycling to Agios Nikolaos Lighthouse, or hiking to the ancient ruins of Karthea, where the temples of Athena and Apollo and a grand amphitheatre offer a fascinating insight into the island’s heritage. In the hillside town of Ioulida, wander through the picturesque village to discover jewellery boutiques, art galleries, and stores selling artisanal local produce.

Wednesday newsletters always feature a hotel or flight review.

A few weeks ago, I enjoyed a relaxing holiday in the Riviera Maya, Mexico, where I stayed at the area’s top three luxury resorts. You can read my trip reports here:

Today: Condor A330neo Business Class (Prime Seat) from Cancun to Frankfurt

I recently flew in Business Class onboard a brand-new Condor Airbus A330-900neo (A330neo) from Cancun (Mexico) to Frankfurt (Germany). Condor – one of world’s largest leisure airlines – recently replaced its aging Boeing 767 fleet by brand-new, state-of-the-art Airbus A330neo aircraft. These planes feature a terrific new Business Class cabin with 30 seats a 1-2-1 staggered layout.  The four seats in the cabin’s front row are marketed as Prime Seats since they offer even more space, a bigger bed, a “visitor” seat, and an extra-large 24 inch 4K screen. Prime Seats – or Business Class “Plus” – are not only significantly larger than the other seats, they also come with a some extra amenities such as pajamas, a premium amenity kit, a sweet & savory snack basket, and a free internet package for unlimited text messaging.

For my Condor A330neo flight from Cancun to Frankfurt, I was able to snatch a Prime Seat. Reserving one of the Prime Seats comes with an extra fee; it can be booked by passengers with a Business Class ticket from an additional EUR 200 (approximately $214 USD), although the pricing varies per route.

Have you ever flown in Condor’s Airbus A330neo? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment.

I made a YouTube video with my impressions onboard, which you can watch here:

  • Trip: Cancun (CUN) to Frankfurt (FRA)
  • Airline: Condor
  • Aircraft type: Airbus A330-900neo
  • Aircraft registration number: D-ANRA (delivered to Condor in 2022)
  • On time departure: 8 pm (no; one hour late)
  • On time arrival: 11 am am (no; one hour late)
  • Miles: 5340 miles (8590 km)
  • Flight time: 10 hours
  • Seat: 2A
  • Class: Business Class

1. LOUNGE AT CANCUN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Cancun is the largest airport in Mexico and Latin America in terms of international passengers. Last year, the airport handled 32,750,411 passengers. The airport comprises several terminals and lounges. Condor’s Business Class passengers have access  to the Plaza Premium Lounge, which is located one floor below the main concourse of the international terminal. The lounge is a third party lounge and also known as the Mera lounge.

The comfortable lounge features a contemporary and elegant decor, with separate areas for lounging and dining (there are no windows though). A self-serve buffet at the center of the lounge offers a selection of sandwiches, snacks, juices,  coffee, soft drinks and several hot entrée selections. There’s also a stylish bar at the far end of the lounge. During times of high occupancy, which was the case during my visit at the lounge, it may be a challenge though to find an available seat.

The lounge is close to the gate which is used by Condor for its flight to Frankfurt.

2. CONDOR A330-900NEO

Over a time span of less than two years, Condor phased out a total of 16 B767 aircraft and successively replaced them with 16 brand-new A330-900neo aircraft.  The A330neo features Airbus’ award-winning Airspace cabin, providing passengers with a high level of comfort, ambience and design. This includes offering more personal space, larger overhead bins, a new lighting system, and the ability to offer the latest in-flight entertainment systems and full connectivity.

All Condor Airbus A330neo aircraft feature a remarkable striped livery, which is inspired by parasols, bath towels and beach chairs, matching Condor’s reputation as a unique leisure airline. The stripes come in five colors – yellow, red, blue, green and beige – which the airline says “stand for the facets of the diversity of Condor’s guests, employees and the multitude of opportunities to discover the world with Condor”. The fuselage also features the carrier’s name in lower case, while the aircraft tailfin is painted with a refreshed version of the Condor signet.

Condor’s A330neo features 216 seats in Economy Class, 64 seats in Premium Economy Class and 30 seats in Business Class (including 4 Prime Seats).

3. BUSINESS CLASS CABIN

Condor’s A330neo aircraft feature 30 lie-flat Business Class seats, which are all located in one cabin in the plane’s front section. The seats are arranged in a staggered 1-2-1 layout with direct aisle access for all passengers. The staggered configuration means that the footwell of each seat is to the side of the seat in front, so it minimizes the pitch required for each seat.

The center of the cabin features 8 rows of paired seats, perfects for couples or friends traveling together, while the Business Class seats on the side along the windows are spread over 7 rows. All Business Class seats feature the same dimensions, but they do differ in terms of privacy and space offered:

  • The window seats in the even numbered rows are closer to the windows, since they have their console on the aisle side. These are the best seats since it’s easier to look outside the window and they feel more private (as you are sheltered a bit from the aisle).
  • The window seats in the odd numbered rows are closer to the aisle (with their console on the window side). These seats feel a bit less private and it’s a bit tougher to look outside the windows, but they’re still an excellent choice.
  • The seats in the center of the plane are paired seats, alternating between ‘honeymoon’ seats (seats next to each other, with their consoles on the aisle side) and seats separated by their consoles. The latter might be less ideal for couples traveling together since you have to lean over a bit to talk to each other.
  • The four Business Class seats in the front row of the cabin (2A, 1E, 1F, and 2K) offer even more space, a bigger bed, a “visitor” seat, an extra-large 24 inch 4K screen, and other exclusive benefits. Since they do offer an even further elevated travel experience, they are called Prime Seats and they can be reserved by Business Class passengers for an extra fee while selecting a seat online.

The color concept of Condor’s A330neo Business Class cabin is marina blue throughout, which compliments the dark wood seat panels and leather upholstering. Condor’s signature striped design theme continues within the cabin, with striped seat covers as well as a striped bulkhead wall, prominently displaying the gold-colored Condor logo. The sophisticated color palette, the striped design elements, as well as the Airbus A330neo’s mood lighting features (which includes a rainbow scheme) creates a chic onboard ambience.

4. BUSINESS CLASS PRIME SEAT

Condor’s Business Class Prime Seat is a customized version of Safran’s Skylounge Core product and has a width of 48 cm (19 inches). The seat itself does not differ from the other Business Class seats in the cabin. One side of the seat features a console comprised of a small storage area, a reading light, a headset hanger, and a cocktail table. Around the cocktail table are three charging outlets, including USB-A, USB-C, and AC, as well as a handset for the inflight entertainment. The seat controls – which are easy to use – are also located on this side of the seat, on a backlit control panel inside the armrest.

What sets the Prime Seat apart from the other Business Class seats in the Condor A330neo cabin is the vast amount of space it offers:

  • The Prime Seat has an incredible pitch of 79 inches (2 m). In comparison, the other Business Class seats have a pitch of 44 inches or 112 cm.
  • The Prime Seat has a huge ottoman (footrest) which can double as an extra seat, allowing face-to-face dining with a travel buddy.
  • In front of the seat is  24 inches 4K monitor, which is much larger compared to the 17 inches 4K monitors at the other Business Class seats.
  • The Prime Seat’s tray table is located on the side of the suite instead of being placed directly under the TV (which is the case at the other Business Class seats).
  • The Prime Seat has a storage compartment next to the foortest, which you won’t find in other seats.

The only possible downside of the Prime Seat is their location in the cabin’s front row and thus, their proximity to the galley and lavatory (although I didn’t experience any issues during my flight).

What are the best Business Class seats onboard Condor’s A330neo?

  • The best seats are the Prime Seats in the front row (sine they offer more space, a bigger bed, a “visitor” seat, an extra-large 24 inch 4K screen), but these seats can only be reserved by paying an extra fee.
  • The best seats for solo travelers are the ‘true’ window seats in rows 2, 4, 6 & 8.
  • The best seats for travel partners are the honeymoon seats in the plane’s center (rows 1, 3, 5 & 7).

What are the worst Business Class seats onboard Condor’s A330neo?

  • The seats in rows 1 and 8 are located close to the galley, which may be bothersome to some passengers (because of more noise and light in this area).
  • The solo window seats in rows 3, 5 and 7 are closer the aisle (since they have their console on the window side) and therefore do not feel very private.
  • The paired center seats in rows 2, 4 and 5 are closer to the aisle (with their consoles in between them), which might be less ideal for travel companions.

5. AMENITIES & BEDDING

Passengers traveling in Business Class onboard one of Condor’s long-haul flights receive the following amenities:

  • Condor’s Business Class amenity kit is presented as a cardboard bag and mainly consist of sustainable materials, such as socks made from 100 percent recycled PET, earplugs in a paper package, and a viscose sleep mask based on bamboo fibers. The kit also includes toothpaste and a bamboo toothbrush with nylon bristles, lip balm and and a facial moisturizer.
  • On all long-haul flights operated with the new Airbus A330neo, a mattress topper is available for even more lying comfort. This consists of a seven-layer system and was specially developed for the seats in the new Condor Business Class.
  • A fluffy pillow.
  • A high-quality 78 inches (2m) long, 51 inches (85 cm) wide blanket.
  • A pair of striped slippers.
  • Noise-cancelling headphones are provided; the seats are also equipped with bluetooth audio, so passengers can also use their own headphones.

Passengers in one of Condor’s Prime Seats also get some extra goodies, including:

  • A premium inflight amenity kit featuring Rituals skincare products and toiletries.
  • Comfortable 100% cotton navy coloured Condor pyjamas with striped accents.
  •  A sweet and savory snack basket, containing Haribo gummy bears, peanut M&Ms, Pringles, chocolate crackers, and salted caramel popcorn.

6. MEALS

During the overnight flight from Cancun to Frankfurt, two meals were served: a dinner after takeoff and a continental breakfast about two hours prior to landing. All meals tasted excellent, were nicely presented (especially the starter), and features decent food portions.

For dinner, I choose the following selection from the menu:

  • Duo of starters:
    • Sautéed Cajun style king prawns, grilled scallop, tomato salsa
    • Chicken skewers, red peppers, cherry tomatoes, marinated roast beef
    • Both starters were served with iceberg lettuce, jicama, carrot, cucumber, tomatoes, balsamic dressing
  • Main course: salmon filet, lemon sauce, grilled eggplants, zucchini, tomatoes, potato-carrot gratin
  • Cheese selection: Schönegrunder mountain cheese, farmer’s gouda, Cheddar cheese
  • Dessert: chocolate mousse, strawberry vanilla sauce

Breakfast was served priot to landing and comprised fresh fruits, Black Forest ham, Italian salami, butter cheese, and an omelet with fresh parlsey (boiled eggs were offered as well).

8. ONBOARD INTERNET

Condor offers high-speed broadband internet on its Airbus A330neo aircraft. Two packages are available for purchase:

  • With FlyConnect Chat (7 euros), you can send text messages via your smartphone or tablet throughout the flight with no time limit.
  • With FlyConnect Surf (20 euro), you can surf online, send text messages, get up-to-date with your e-mails, stream music and use your VPN client throughout your flight with no time limit (max 1200 kbps).

The Prime Seat comes with a free internet package for unlimited text messaging.

9. OTHER INFLIGHT EXPERIENCES

# CREW: the Condor cabin crew on this flight was courteous, friendly and efficient. The service was warm and personal, attentive but not intrusive.

# LAVATORY: there are two lavatories, one at the front and one at the rear of the Business Class cabin, enough for 30 seats. The lavatories are stocked with Korres amenities and feature walls decorated with beige and white stripes.

10. MY VERDICT
  • Cabin design: 9/10
  • Seat comfort (upright): 8/10
  • Seat comfort (bed position): 8/10

Today: Top 10 airlines offering Business Class “Plus”

Some airlines have taken their Business Class product to a new level by introducing Business Class “Plus”. This new concept comes from an innovative idea to integrate a seat with a First Class footprint within a Business Class cabin. In most cases, these Business Class “Plus” seats are located in the first row of the Business Class cabin. It allows airlines to offer a premium product up front in the Business Class cabin without losing out on passenger count. Here are the only 10 airlines that currently offer a Business Class “Plus” seat (although not all airlines market that product as such).

Have you ever flown in Business Class “Plus”? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment.

10. SINGAPORE AIRLINES BULKHEAD SEAT (BOEING 777 & AIRBUS A350)

Singapore Airlines features a great Business Class product – with seats arranged in a 1-2-1 layout – onboard its Boeing 777 and Airbus A350 aircraft. Each seat comes with a footrest, but the size of this footrest differs from seat to seat. Most seats have a foot cubby to the side, except for the bulkhead seats, which are equipped with seat-wide ottomans making for a much better flying experience (whether sitting up or sleeping).  Singapore Airlines doesn’t formally market this special product as a Business Class “Plus” product and does not charge extra for these seat but they are only available to elite members of its frequent flyer program KrisFlyer ((although they also become available to other Business Class passengers 92 hours prior to departure).

9. CHINA EASTERN LUXURY BUSINESS CLASS (AIRBUS A350)

China Eastern Airlines’A350 flagship aircraft offers a three class cabin layout of 288 seats: 40 Business Class, 32 Premium Economy Class and 216 Economy Class seats. The four Business Class seats in the first row feature a lot more space and are branded as ‘Luxury Business Class’ seats. All four seats have fold up buddy seats to accompany the unique table offering of these front row seats, allowing a face to face seated passenger experience. Each buddy seat comes with integrated seat belts allowing passengers to remain in the suites during turbulence. The “air living room” center double suites provide a unique table offering allowing small groups of up to four passengers to sit around a larger conference table made up of two smaller meal tables.

8. SHANGHAI AIRLINES LUXURY BUSINESS CLASS SEAT (BOEING 787)

Shanghai Airlines is an airline headquartered in Shanghai and a wholly owned subsidiary of China Eastern Airlines. As such, it should not come as a surprise that the carrier has installed the same type of Business Class product onboards its Boeing 787-9 longhaul fleet as its mother company. Compared to regular Business Class seats, the seats in the front row are more spacious and come with double doors. In addition, the center pair of these front-row seats can be converted from two private suites into a larger, shared space that is ideal for couples or colleagues traveling together and also creates an incentive for passengers to select the inboard suites over the often-preferred outboard window suites.

7. LUFTHANSA ALLEGRIS BUSINESS CLASS SUITE (AIRBUS A350)

Lufthansa’s recently launched new Business Class cabin – called “Allegris” – offers six seating options with the highest level of comfort, all of them featuring chest-high walls and sliding doors. Each suite also offers its own wardrobe & personal minibar and can be individually heated or cooled as desired. The suites in the first rows of the A350’s two Business Class cabins offer an abundant amount of space, including higher partitions, extra storage, larger ottomans, and larger entertainment screens. Thanks to its exclusive position in the first row you’ll enjoy peace and quiet and lots of privacy. Passengers in these suites also receive an enhanced soft product, including extra bedding and pajamas. For now, Lufthansa is offering free seat selection while the product is finding its feet.

6. ASIANA BUSINESS CLASS SUITE (AIRBUS A380)

In 2019, South Korean carrier Asiana rebranded its First Class offering on its A380 superjumbo aircraft as “Business Suites”. The 12 Business Suites are located in rows 1 to 3 on the Airbus A380’s lower deck. Each suite is equipped with two sliding doors, a full flat-bed stretching 82 inch (210 cm) in length and one of the world’s largest 32 inch (81 cm) HD personal monitors. Asiana’s A380 Business Suite is the most spacious Business Class seat in the world, offering an experience that comes very close to First Class. Moreover, the Business Suite comes with an enhanced soft product, including access to Asiana’s First Class lounge at Incheon International Airport, extra bedding onboard and selected culinary offerings.

5. MALAYSIA AIRLINES BUSINESS CLASS SUITE (AIRBUS A350)

In 2018, Malaysia Airlines rebranded its First Class seats in its Airbus A350 aircraft to Business Suites. These four suites, located in the front row of the plane, are a lot more spacious than regular Business Class seats and come with retractable privacy doors, 24-inch inflight entertainment screens, extra console stowage, and a magazine rack. Malaysia Airlines also offers an enhanced soft product since Business Suites are complemented by a dedicated check-in counter, access to Malaysia Airlines’ First Class Lounge, extra baggage allowance as well as a fine dining experience onboard. Contrary to the other Business Class “Plus” products in this list, Malayia Airlines’ Business Suite is sold as a separate product (and not as an upgrade option to Business Class passengers).

4. VIRGIN ATLANTIC RETREAT SUITE (AIRBUS A330neo)

Virgin Atlantic’s Business Class cabin (designated as ‘Upper Class’) onboard its brand-new Airbus A330neo aircraft boasts The Retreat Suite, which consists of two exclusive suites at the front of the cabin. The Retreat is the airline’s most spacious suite yet, comprising a fully flat bed with a length of 200 cm (79 inches) and a 27 inches touchscreen with Bluetooth connectivity and wireless charging. With each suite boasting an ottoman that doubles up as an extra seat, up to four people can comfortably dine, chat or play games in their own private social space. There’s no difference in soft product between The Retreat and the 30 Upper Class (Business Class) suites located in the same cabin.

3. JETBLUE MINT STUDIO (AIRBUS A321)

Although Jetblue is a low cost carrier, the carrier does offer a superb Business Class product (designated Mint) on transatlantic A321 flights between New York and London, Paris and Amsterdam, with excellent food, amenities and seats. Each A321 also has two Mint Studios in the first row of the Business Class cabin, which come with all the bells and whistles of the regular Business Class suites (such as sliding doors) plus some extras. The latter include an extra side table, a guest seat that can accommodate an additional Mint customer during flight for face-to-face dining, and the largest TV (22 inches) and largest lie-flat bed of any USA carrier.  There’s no differentiation to the soft product.

JETBLUE MINT STUDIO (AIRBUS A321)

2. CONDOR PRIME SEAT (AIRBUS A330neo)

The four Business Class seats in the front row of Condor’s brand-new Airbus A330-900neo Business Class cabin are called Prime Seats since they offer an even further elevated travel experience compared to regular Business Class seats. This includes more space, a bigger bed, a “visitor” seat (which allows face-to-face dining with a buddy), and an extra-large 24 inch 4K screen. Condor also differentiates the soft product since passengers booked in the Prime Seats get some extra amenities & goodies, such as pajamas and a welcome snack basket (containing Haribo gummy bears, peanut M&Ms, Pringles, chocolate crackers, and salted caramel popcorn).

  • Review: read here my review of Condor’s Prime Seat (Cancun to Frankfurt flight)

1. AIR FRANCE BULKHEAD SUITE (BOEING 777 & AIRBUS A350)

Air France’s bulkhead Business Class suites onboard the carrier’s A350 and refurbished B777 aircraft offer an enormous amount of extra space, which equals that and even tops the space you usually find in First Class cabins. The ottomans of these seats are the largest you’ll find in the skies, allowing for a good night’s rest when the seat is fully reclined. Complete privacy is also guaranteed by means of a sliding door. So far, Air France has not made a lot of fuzz about this feature and the carrier doesn’t sell these seats at an extra cost but they are only available to Flying Blue elite members at booking (although they also become available to other Business Class passengers 72 hours prior to departure).

The new safety video, which was created and produced together by Spafax Creative Studio and Lufthansa, transports passengers to some of the world’s most recognized and loved destinations. From Munich to Mount Fuji to New York City, we tell a story of connection, wonder and diversity using the same cutting-edge technology used by major Hollywood studios and streaming platforms. Featuring both German and English instructions, this video unfolds like a short film and underscores the transformative power of travel by weaving critical safety information into an engaging story across the passenger journey. “After the personal welcome by the flight attendants, the safety video is another very important point of contact with our customers. Wednesday newsletters always feature a hotel or flight review.

A few weeks ago, I enjoyed a relaxing holiday in the Riviera Maya, Mexico, where I stayed at the area’s top three luxury resorts. You can read my trip reports here:

Today: Review of Rosewood Mayakoba, Riviera Maya (Mexico)

Surrounded by verdant emerald jungle and white sands, Rosewood Mayakoba defines a private world of rare luxury and refined beauty. Located in the heart of Mexico’s Riviera Maya, the ultra-luxury hotel lies along a stretch of Caribbean beach and features an indulgent Sense, A Rosewood Spa, El Camaleón championship golf course designed by Greg Norman and an array of active and leisurely recreational pursuits. A journey to this serene retreat captivates the soul with stunning natural beauty and pure refinement. Rosewood Mayakoba features 129 suites – located either along the mangroves or along the beach – plus 15 two-six bedroom villas and the famed six bedroom beachfront Founders Villa.

Rosewood Mayakoba features in my top 10 lists of the best luxury hotels on the Riviera Maya and the best Rosewood Hotels & Resorts in the world.

Have you ever stayed at Rosewood Mayakoba? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment.

In this review (more info and photos below my YouTube video):

PROS & THINGS I LIKE
  • Surrounded by emerald jungle and winding lagoons, Rosewood Mayakoba is situated at the center of a gated resort enclave – called Mayakoba – which is located just north of the picturesque seaside village of Playa del Carmen and 40 minutes south of Cancun International Airport. Encompassing 595 acres of pristine lagoons, jungles and beaches, Mayakoba is home four award-winning hotels (Rosewood Mayakoba, Banyan Tree Mayakoba, Fairmont Mayakoba, and Andaz Mayakoba), luxury residences and world-class resort offerings, including world-class cuisine, wellness, golf and beach clubs, designed to preserve and enhance the native landscape. Guests of Mayakoba enjoy easy access to white sand beaches, numerous land-and waterbased activities, nearby Mayan ruins and Mayakoba’s El Camaleón Championship Golf Course.
  • Rosewood Mayakoba is an ultra-luxury retreat where ocean, jungle and sky meet. It is a unique property comprised of two completely different resort areas. One part of the resort covers many small islands which are surrounded by a mangrove jungle and a labyrinth of freshwater canals, while the other resort area is situated along a mile long beach, bordering the second largest coral reef in the world. Both resort areas are home to distinct accommodations, restaurants and facilities, and connected by a beautiful path that cuts through the mangrove forest. All guests get bikes for the duration of their stay and 24/7 buggy service is provided as well, so wherever you are, you are always just minutes away from every area with the resort, despite the enormous size of the Rosewood Mayakoba’s private resort grounds.
  • Designed by American architect firm Three, Rosewood Mayakoba was created with the intention of providing a deep connection with the natural mangrove landscape, which is home to over hundreds of indigenous wild birds, iguanas, turtles, and monkeys. This is already achieved during the check-in process, when guests arrive at the resort’s open-air lobby, which is set at the heart of the mangrove, offering magnificent views of the wilderness due to its elevated position. The lobby, just like the other resort pavilions, features a contemporary design and was built using the finest local materials, mainly wood and limestone, that were proven to be the most appropriate materials for construction in such a delicate environment. A staircase spirals down from the lobby to the lagoon, where small boats are waiting to shuttle guests to their accommodations, gliding through the peaceful canals.
  • Rosewood Mayakoba features 129 oversized suites, which are either built along the serene mangrove lagoons or set along the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Each suite is crafted from indigenous materials such as Yutacan limestone and renewable wood, and offers panoramic views of the surrounding natural habitat. Depending on the location, the view ranges from the serene winding lagoons of Mayakoba to the rooftop ocean views of the resort’s beachfront accommodations, each providing a very different and unique experience. Besides these beach or lagoon accommodations, there are also wellness suites, which are located close to the spa and whose guests enjoy complimentary access to scheduled fitness and wellness classes. All luxurious retreats are complemented with 24-hour butler service.
  • During my visit, I stayed in a beautiful Deluxe Lagoon Suite, which was set along the mangroves and accessed via its own individual boat dock. The spacious one-bedroom stand-alone villa featured a bedroom with king bed and sitting room – with dining area and sofa bed – that could be closed off from the bedroom with sliding doors for additional privacy. The ensuite bathroom was equipped with two wash basins, an indoor shower, a large soaking bathtub and outdoor rain shower set amidst lush cascading greenery. There was also a second bathroom with a rain shower. The spacious interior was outfitted with contemporary furnishings and a modern design emphasizing chic simplicity. Both the living room and bedroom opened to an outdoor terrace and a tropical garden, complete with a private plunge pool.
  • Rosewood Mayakoba also features a collection of ultra-luxurious Private Residences which are situated along the property’s winding freshwater lagoons or overlooking the ocean. With interior envisioned by Caroline Masserman of Bando x Seidel Meersseman, the private villas are available for nightly bookings and have four distinctive layouts. Each of the two to six bedroom villas reflect a senses of relaxed sophistication and refined subtlety through a layered approach to materials, colors and textures that complement Rosewood Mayakoba’s modern architecture and celebration of Mexican traditions. All Private Residences offer an open floor plan, oversized terraces and contemporary custom furnishings crafted by Mexican artisans, reflecting the region’s Mayan heritage.
  • Rosewood Maykoba features three beautiful pools areas, two of them located by the beach:
    • Surrounded by a beautiful tropical deck, Casa Del Lago pool is located next to the lobby – in front of Casa Del Lago Restaurant (more on that below) and overlooks the lagoon and waterways of Mayakoba. Since most guests are relaxing at their private pool or near the beach during the day, it’s always quite here.
    • The beach-front Punta Benito pool is located in front of the restaurant with the same name. The distinctive infinity edge family pool comes with two built-in Jacuzzis as well as an expansive lounge area. It offers sweeping views of the azure waters blending seamlessly into the vibrant blue sky.
    • Right next to the Punta Benito pool area is the resort’s adults-only beach club. Here, open-air palapas, three small pools, and seaside lounge seating exclusive to resort guests offer a pristine oceanfront Caribbean setting to enjoy from day to night.
  • The heart of wellness at Rosewood Mayakoba is the resort’s state-of-the-art Sense, A Rosewood Spa, which is tucked away on its own private island among freshwater lagoons. This luxurious healing environment offers twelve treatment rooms, full hydrotherapy circuits, relaxation lounges, a private yoga pavilion, eight overnight Wellness Suites, and sensory Kuxtal Garden – a place of profound peace reflecting the Mayan philosophy of life. The wellness destination offers a spectrum of transformative experiences to expand, illuminate, and guide guests toward renewed strength, balance, and health. The spa is also home to a spacious fitness center, which includes a full range of cardio and resistance equipment, a widespread area dedicated to stretching and free weights, as well as functional training accessories such as TRX and BOSU available with private training sessions.
  • Rosewood Mayakoba features a wide range of restaurants and bars:
    • Located along the main pool near the lobby is Casa Del Lago. Each morning, the venue offers authentic a la carte dishes, including classic chilaquiles, traditional sopes, and four variations of huevos rancheros. In addition, a small continental breakfast offers premium cheeses, meats, smoked salmon, local fruit, pastries, cereals, yogurts, and more. At night, Casa del Lago transitions into a sleek dinnertime restaurant with an ever-evolving menu.
    • Set next to the lobby is Agave Azul Savor, a contemporary venue serving fresh Baja California seafood with Asian influences overlooking the lagoon.
    • Zapote Bar is a day-to-night destination serving craft cocktails that showcase hand-crafted spirits and draw inspiration from the Yucatán. Ranked among North America’s 50 Best Bars for two consecutive year, Zapote Bar also serves Middle Eastern influences and Lebanese live-fire cooking techniques in honor of the Yucatán’s diverse culinary roots.
    • Set beneath a stunning Ceiba tree in the resort’s lush gardens, La Ceiba Garden & Kitchen offers authentic al fresco culinary adventure showcasing traditional Mayan cooking techniques. This one-of-a-kind culinary journey celebrates the Yucatan Peninsula’s storied Mayan roots with a multi-course menu showcasing traditional open-flame cooking techniques and hyper-seasonal regional ingredients. Guests are seated at long communal tables alongside fellow guests as well as Rosewood staff members. The restaurant is home to limited-run culinary collaborations with esteemed chefs from around Mexico, the USA, and beyond.
    • Located along the beachfront famlily pool, Punta Bonita is a laid-back eatery with indoor and terrace seating showcases the vibrant palate of Mexico’s Southern Pacific Coast.  Open for lunch and dinner, the venue serves freshly caught seafood, made-to-order ceviche, and mesquite charcoal-cooked tlayudas.
    • Aqui Me Quedo is a restaurant located at the adults-only beach club, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. During the day, the venue also includes La Cantina, a retrofitted vintage food truck, serving casual Mexican fare such as ceviche, Tijuana-style shrimp tacos, frozen cocktails, and more. Once the sun goes down, Aquí Me Quedo transitions into a sleek nighttime restaurant on the sand, highlighting flavors from the southern coast of Mexico, as well as hosts rotating culinary experiences including Thursday night’s Mexican Grill, and Sunday’s Beach Food Fest, a tribute to the country’s vibrant street food culture.
    • Located in El Pueblito village square, La Fondita A chic cantina offering tostadas and mezcals.
    • Pan Dulce Ais a delectable Mexican bakery situated in El Pueblito village square.
  • Rosewood Mayakoba is managed by Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, one of the world’s most exclusive hotel brands. The Rosewood story began in 1979 when a historic mansion in Dallas, Texas was transformed into an acclaimed world-class hotel – The Mansion on Turtle Creek – whose success was the blueprint for all subsequent Rosewood properties. Today, the group manages a distinctive collection of residential-style hotels across the globe, including famous properties such as The Carlyle (New York) and Las Ventanas al Paraíso (Mexico). Each property delivers a one-of-a-kind ambience and style, in which location, culture, history and geography are part of the fabric of the hotel, reflecting the company’s “Sense of Place” philosophy. I have previously reviewed the following Rosewood Hotels & Resorts:

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

  • The effects of climate change – with beach erosion due to gobal warming –  are evident along the Riviera Maya. And unfortunately, this is particularly visible at Mayakoba, where chronic erosion has stripped the area of some of its white-sand beachfront. Mayakoba used to have one of the widest and most stunning beaches on the Riviera Maya, but today, it’s mostly just a narrow strip of white sands. In 2017, the Mayakoba enclave took efforts to restore the beach to its former glory by rebuilding the area’s coastal dunes and creating new coral barriers. The aim was to create a far better and wider beach, and although that may have partly succeeded in certain areas of the resort, it did come at a cost since the view of the beach has changed (with erosion and algae barriers clearly visible right in front of the resort).
  • The beaches of the Riviera Maya – including Mayakoba Beach – are affected by the presence of sargassum seaweed, which is a concern to many travelers. Historically, the seaweed season typically started at the beginning of spring (April) due to a rise in sea temperature, and peaked during the summer months. However, in the last decade and probably due to global warming, seaweed has appeared at any time throughout the year, making it challenging to predict its seasonal patterns. For example, when I visited in late January, a massive amount of seaweed washed onshore during several storms that passed over the area. Unfortunately, the seaweed at Mayakoba wasn’t removed on a daily basis, which was a contrast with the other Riviera Maya resorts I stayed at.
  • Although Rosewood Mayakoba is located in an enormous estate, the resort may feel crowded in certain areas at times of high occupancy. This is particularly the case at the family pool along the beach, the adults only beach club and the restaurants. During peak season, the restaurants, spa and activities also get booked up quickly, so plan and book early. Also, the resort clearly focuses on American tourists, with an American vibe present in most resort areas (e.g. loud music in the bars & restaurants, communal dining tables,  etc …)., which you will either love or hate, depending on your own preferences.
  • Food at Rosewood Mayakoba is great, albeit expensive, and is not included in most room packages. Also, the resort has many bars and restaurants and the wide variety of culinary concepts can be a bit confusing at first. For example, Zapote is called a bar (and is proud of its inclusion in North America’s 50 best bars) but its in fact a restaurant. Also, with the exception of the sushi restaurant, all venues seem to serve Mexican inspired food, without clear distinction. Personally, I also missed the presence of a signature restaurant at Rosewood Mayakoba, a true fine dining restaurant offering a serene and tranquil ambiance and with the ambition to collect one or more Michelin stars.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The Riviera Maya in Mexico has a subtropical climate with two seasons – a rainy season (May to October) and a dry season (November to April). The best time to visit is December to March when the temperatures are a bit more comfortable and there are fewer rain showers. During the rainy season, period temperatures remain high and although it rains every day, downpours don’t tend to be prolonged. There is a chance for hurricanes, especially from July to October.

HOW TO GET THERE

Rosewood Mayakoba, Riviera Maya, Mexico is located 40 minutes by car from Cancun International Airport, which is served by most North- and South American as well as some European airlines. Today: How to book The Residence, Etihad’s A380 three-room suite?

A few weeks ago, I posted my content (YouTube video  and blog review) about my Abu Dhabu to London flight in The Residence, the world’s most exclusive First Class cabin. Exclusively available on Etihad Airways’ A380 aircraft on routes between Abu Dhabi, London, New York and soon Paris, The Residence is the only three-room suite on a passenger aircraft, featuring a private bedroom, ensuite bathroom (with shower), and a living room. The uber-luxurious space is located on the A380’s upper deck and can accommodate a maximum of two passengers.

The Residence was first introduced by Etihad in 2014, with one-way tickets between London and Abu Dhabi starting at $20,000 USD. But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world in 2020, Etihad stored its A380 aircraft and the future of The Residence seemed uncertain. However, with the resurgent travel demand, Etihad brought back a small number of its A380 aircraft in 2023, The Residence along with them, albeit with a different soft product (more on that below).

With the return of the A380, Etihad has made The Residence more accessible to the general traveling public. Pre-pandemic, Etihad sold The Residence as a separate, exorbitantly expensive travel class besides Economy, Business Class, and First Class. But since its post-pandemic re-introduction, The Residence can no longer be booked directly and is only offered as an upgrade option to a First Class ticket, to be paid with miles or cash.

In this blog article:

The Residence hard & soft product

Guests of The Residence can enjoy a terrific hard product, the only three-room suite on a passenger aircraft, featuring a private bedroom, ensuite bathroom (with shower), and a living room. But as already mentioned,  Etihad changed the soft product of The Residence since its post-pandemic re-introduction. The amenities and culinary offering are now the same as in First Class and you no longer get the pre-pandemic special perks such as butler service and customized menus. That said, passengers of The Residence still get a few extra perks over First Class passenger:

  • An escort through Abu Dhabi Airport
  • Access to a private room in the Etihad First Class Lounge at Abu Dhabi Airport
  • One additional item on the onboard menu (afternoon tea)
  • Enhanced tableware and glassware onboard
ETIHAD FIRST CLASS LOUNGE AT ABU DHABI
ETIHAD FIRST CLASS LOUNGE

Book The Residence with cash

Passengers with a First Class ticket on Etihad’s A380 can make the upgrade to The Residence via Etihad’s call center or online, either at the time of booking or through Etihad’s “manage my booking” section. When making the upgrade online, The Residence will pop up as a choice during the seat selection process. Etihad doesn’t publish the cost for an upgrade from First Class to The Residence, but it’s much more reasonable than it used to be. For example, a quick search shows that First Class passengers on the Abu Dhabi to London route may to upgrade to The Residence for around $2000 USD (7,310 AED) while the cost for an upgrade to The Residence on the Abu Dhabi to New York route is around $4000 USD (14,660 AED).

ETIHAD A380 THE RESIDENCE
THE RESIDENCE: LIVING ROOM

Book The Residence with miles

Passengers with a First Class ticket on one of Etihad’s A380 routes can also upgrade to The Residence with miles via Etihad’s frequent flyer program Etihad Guest. Etihad has not officially published a chart with the number of miles need for an upgrade, but a quick search shows that an upgrade from First Class to The Residence will cost you around 300,000 Etihad Guest miles on the Abu Dhabi to London route and around 600,000 Etihad Guest miles on the Abu Dhabi to Paris route. That’s a staggering amount of miles of course, but it can make for a once-in-a-lifetime experience of course.

ETIHAD A380 THE RESIDENCE
THE RESIDENCE: BEDROOM

Major restriction for booking The Residence

A major restriction that you need to beware of is that the upgrade from First Class to The Residence is only offered to passengers that booked their First Class ticket either in cash or miles directly via Etihad. First Class award tickets that are booked via the frequent flyer program of a partner airline (such as AAdvantage by American Airlines) cannot be upgraded to The Residence.

Wednesday newsletters always feature a hotel or flight review.

A few weeks ago, I enjoyed a relaxing holiday in the Riviera Maya, Mexico, where I stayed at the area’s top three luxury resorts. You can read my trip reports here:

Today: Review of  The St Regis Kanai Resort (Riviera Maya, Mexico)

Securing its spot on countless “best” lists, the all-new St. Regis Kanai Resort boasts an an exceptional circular exterior, signature butler service, and prime beachfront location within a 680-acre gated community. But those aren’t the only reasons you’ll love it. All 124 guest rooms and suites offer ocean views (some also have private plunge pools). And with eight distinct bars and restaurants, you can satisfy your craving for elevated Mexican cuisine one night and Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, or Asian Fusion the next.

The St Regis Kanai features in my top 10 lists of the best luxury resorts on the Riviera Maya and my favorite St Regis Hotels & Resorts in the world.

Have you ever stayed at The St Regis Kanai, Riviera Maya? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment.

I made a YouTube video with full tour of The St Regis Kanai, which you can watch here:

In this review (more info and photos below my YouTube video):

PROS & THINGS I LIKE
  • The St Regis Kanai Resort, Riviera Maya is set within the tranquil, private resort area of KanaiKanai is known as the celestial mythological birthplace of the Mayans, who first named the land Kanai, meaning “where the sky is born.” Located in the heart of the Riviera Maya, within a 30 minutes drive from Cancun Airport and 10 minutes from Playa del Carmen’s Downtown, Kanai is a 680 acre secured gated community which is home to 3 luxury resorts: The St Regis, The Edition, and Etereo (700 rooms and residences in total). The resort sits among a jungle and mangrove reserve and features 2 miles (3 km) of pristine white sand beaches. Kanai is also less than half a mile away from an undisturbed coral reef, offering a dazzling arrays of different types of coral and providing food to hundreds of fish species, marine turtles, and other marine creatures.
  • Designed by Mexican firm Edmonds International, The St Regis Kanai Resort features an exceptional circular architecture, resulting in open views from nearly every vantage point. The impressive design comes forth as two small intersected circles that contain the public areas and three large semicircles which house the rooms & suites. The circular buildings float above a seemingly endless sea of lush green mangroves, which – when viewed from above – almost look like an ultra-modern white spaceship that landed in bright-green vegetation. In fact, the resort’s layout reflects the constellation Pleiades, which the Mayans considered to be the birthplace of their ancient ancestors. The circular design motif also alludes to the sun-shaped Mayan calendar comprising 13 moons lasting 28 days.
  • Upon arrival, guests of The St Regis Kanai are immediately immersed in the resort’s stunning architecture with a multi-story open air water installation and lush greenery leading into the resort’s majestic, double-story lobby. Within the enormous, semi-open air lobby space, biophilic features like skylights and living walls merge indoor and outdoor environments, allowing guests to physically experience Riviera Maya from within. The reception and concierge area is tucked away in an intimate corner of the lobby, while several tranquil nooks and lounge areas are perfect for relaxation, meditation and observation of sunsets and starry nights. The lobby’s far end offers floor-to-ceiling panoramic views of the mangroves and the Caribbean Sea beyond.
  • Drawing inspiration from ancient Mayan culture, The St Regis Kanai’s sophisticated aesthetics and contemporary interiors were created by Chapi Chapo Design. The elegant decor is accented with bespoke elements including custom furniture and artwork from local artisans. The Mayan Calendar is recreated through textiles within the public areas and guestrooms, with elements inspired by ceremonial Mayan garments. The resort’s interior design also evokes the surrounding elements from the mangrove trees to the nearby cenotes – natural sinkholes commonly used for water supplies by the Maya. Rich materials imitating this natural ecosystem include marbles with hues of blue, grey and green that mimic the surrounding elements and travertine to resemble local limestone, while walnut wood brings rich warmth and grounding to each area of the resort where design imitates life.
  • The St Regis Kanai Resort, Riviera Maya boasts 124 lavishly appointed guestrooms and 19 suites. Guestrooms feature custom hanging mirrors, bedside tables, ceramic light pendants, and intricate walnut wood-carved headboards, while ensuites bathrooms are equipped with double vanities, bathtubs and walk-in showers. The guestrooms on the first and second floor all have balconies with uninterrupted sea views, while the ground-level rooms enjoy views over the mangrove and also have a private plunge pool. The best suites are located at the end of each semi-circle since they come with a large outdoor space, with an outdoor shower, hammock and/or pool. Guests of all room categories have access to the St Regis Signature Butler Service.
  • The St Regis Kanai Resort features two massive beach-front pool areas, one dedicated to families and the other one only available to adults. The family pool area is comprised of two large swimming pools, which are lined by dozens of sunbeds (some of them set inside the pool). One of these pools also features several luxurious cabanas – with lounge areas and a large TV screen – which can be rented for the day for a fee. The family pool area also has an indoor games room, which comes with its own TV lounge, bar and small outdoor pool. Located next to the family pool is the adults only beach club, which features a large swimming pool, a separate Jacuzzi, and a bar serving cocktails and light fare. Both the family pool and adults only beach club open to a beautiful white sand beach, lapped by the turquoise Caribbean Sea.
  • The St Regis Kanai Resort’s wellness center is a tranquil enclave located at the end of the enormous lobby. Featuring eight treatment suites and a standalone relaxation salon, the spa offers treatments inspired by ancient practices and featuring local ingredients. Signature treatments include the Secret Garden ritual, allowing guests to hand select ingredients from the hotel’s garden to personalize a body scrub and mask. Another great treatment is the Celestial Energy treatment, which is inspired by Mayan cosmology and uses hot stones energized under the moon & stars and aromatherapy based on the phase of the moon. Next to the spa is the exclusive Athletic Club, featuring a range of cardio and strength equipment as well as an outdoor yoga platform.
  • The St Regis Kanai, Riviera Maya offers gastronomic journeys in eight culinary venues.
    • The hotel’s signature restaurant TORO by Chef Richard Sandoval is a bar and restaurant with a Latin-inspired menu led by the esteemed chef.
    • Located next to the lobby, Chaya Restaurant features a menu that combines local ingredients and regional touches of Riviera Maya with culinary elements rooted in Eastern Mediterranean history. Each morning, a breakfast buffet with some local Mexican touches is also offered at Chaya.
    • Located along the family pool, Riviera is a smart casual restaurant, open for lunch only, which seamlessly blends the South of France with the Mayan Riviera. The venue serves fresh seafood and other dishes prepared from local ingredients.
    • A tea and chocolate salon located next to the lobby, The Library serves St Regis’s signature ritual of afternoon tea and it’s a great backdrop to enjoy a tasting of Mexican chocolate.
    • Located on the second floor, the intimate St Regis Bar offers the Kanai Mary, a local take on the brand’s signature Bloody Mary cocktail, which incorporates ingredients from the ancient Maya diet including corn, peppers and cucumber. Designed to feature views of the sunset, the bar marks the transition from day to night with a celebratory champagne sabering each evening.
    • Additional dining venues include Jack’s Club (a hidden speakeasy), Pik Nik (a grab-and-go deli), and The Beach Club for light bites while relaxing seaside.
  • Designed with a minimal construction footprint aimed at protecting the Sian Ka’an Reserve (a UNESCO World Heritage Site adjacent to the resort) , The St Regis Kanai Resort, Riviera Maya is ingeniously suspended above a mangrove forest on stilts, minimizing the effects on the fragile habitats underneath. To further minimize ecological impact, the different parts of the hotel connected by elevated walkways. To preserve as much of the reserve and native flora as possible, the developers of the Kanai community built on only 9% of their entire property. They left the remainder – largely dense jungle and mangrove forest – untouched, building along a single road through the reserve and putting all buildings and pavilions on stilts where necessary.
  • Combining classic sophistication with a modern sensibility, St Regis Hotels & Resorts – which currently manages Kanai property – is one of my favorite luxury hotel brands in the world. Combining timeless glamour with a vanguard spirit, St. Regis Hotels & Resorts is committed to delivering exquisite experiences at nearly 50 luxury hotels and resorts in some of the best addresses around the world. Beginning with the debut of The St. Regis hotel in New York by John Jacob Astor IV at the dawn of the twentieth century, the brand has remained committed to an uncompromising level of bespoke and anticipatory service for all of its guests, delivered flawlessly by the signature St Regis Butler Service. Part of the Marriott Hotel Group, St Regis participates in Marriott Bonvoy, the global loyalty program from Marriott (allowing to collect points and spend them for free nights).

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

  • The St Regis Kanai features a stunning architecture, but the entire structure – comprised of several intersecting circles – is massive and doesn’t feel very intimate. Also, the buildings are so big that you can walk through them without running into a lot of people (except at the pools). Some guests will adore this mind-blowing modern architecture while others may find it soulless and reminiscent of an airport or museum. However, no matter how you feel about the architecture, the overall design of the resort – especially the lobby – will leave you speechless.
  • The St Regis Kanai features a total of 143 rooms, but only 19 of these are suites while the rest are just regular rooms. While the rooms are spacious and luxurious, and equipped with private balconies and terraces, they do not have the same wow-factor as the villa-style accommodations offered at some of The St Regis’ direct competitors in the area, such as Rosewood Mayakoba (although the St Regis’ rooms are sold at the same rate as the villas at other properties).
  • The beaches of the Riviera Maya are affected by the presence of sargassum seaweed, which is a concern to many travelers. That said, the beach in front of The St Regis Kanai seemed to be less affected by the seaweed problem when compared to other beaches in the area (such as Mayakoba). Also, each morning and afternoon, the beach is meticulously cleared of seawed by the resort staff.

The St Regis Kanai, Riviera Maya, Mexico is located 40 minutes by car from Cancun International Airport, which is served by most North- and South American as well as some European airlines. Check the Wikipedia page of Cancun International Airport for a continuously updated list of airlines that offer direct flights to Cancun.

Today: How to book & save money at Belmond Hotels?

Belmond ranks among my favorite hotel brands in the world. The company manages an ultraluxe collection of iconic hotels, trains and river cruises in 24 countries, bringing together some of the world’s most sensational journeys and destinations. With Belmond, you can stay in timeless hotels in Venice, Rio and St. Petersburg, embrace the spirit of adventure at Machu Picchu or Angkor Wat, glide along the rails through the Swiss Alps, soar across the Andes, or explore the mystifying rivers of Myanmar. The Belmond story began in 1976, when the company received the keys to the legendary Belmond Hotel Cipriani in Venice. A year later, they began collecting the carriages for the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, which launched in 1982 to whisk intrepid travelers to La Serenissima in style. Since then, Belmond has grown to a carefully curated collection of travel adventures, each with a rich story to tell.

But with the group’s stellar reputation also comes a heavy price tag. Staying at a Belmond property often requires deep pockets, with entry room rates well above $1000 USD per night at several properties. Unfortunately, Belmond currently lacks a formalized points loyalty program – probably because their wealthy guests keep returning anyway – although they manage an invitation-only program called “Belmond Bellini Club” which offers exclusive rates and perks to the clients of the world’s top travel agents (more on that below). However, there are some tips & tricks that can save you a few bucks on costs when staying at one of the brand’s properties. I hereby share the best strategies for booking a room (or even suite) at a Belmond Hotel .

In this article:

You can share your own tricks in the comments below.

BELMOND JIMBARAN PURI, BALI
BELMOND JIMBARAN PURI, BALI

1. BOOK VIA BELMOND BELLINI CLUB

Belmond has established an invitation-only program – called Belmond Bellini Club – for top producing travel agents, in order to foster a relationship with these agent and to increase sales. The Bellini Club is named after the famous cocktail from Harry’s Bar at Belmond’s Hotel Cipriani. Belmond Bellini Club offers clients of these travel agents complimentary amenities and VIP status at Belmond hotels, trains and river cruises worldwide. These benefits are a bit similar to the perks offered by Virtuoso, although Belmond Bellini Club covers more properties than those offered by Virtuoso, and for some properties, the Belmond Billini Club perks are more rewarding than the Virtuoso perks.

When you book a Belmond hotel through a travel agent that is member of the exclusive Belmond Bellini Club, you will get the following benefits:

  • Complimentary upgrade upon arrival at time of check-in, based on availability
  • Buffet or full breakfast for 2, daily
  • Fully flexible hotel or resort credit up to $200 USD per stay
  • $500 USD gift voucher for future travel when purchasing an experience of $5,000 USD
  • VIP Recognition by property management and staff
  • Special in-room welcome amenity
  • Top-of-the-waitlist priority for high demand properties and experiences
  • Complimentary Internet

Travel agents that are members of Belmond Bellini Club enjoy a level of contact and service when working with Belmond that’s not accessible to other agencies or through booking direct. As a Bellini member, these travel agents work with Belmond’s VIP desk for any special requests, concierge services, and waitlist clearance. Additionally, they have access to special promotions and rates not available to the general public. My preferred Belmond Bellini Club travel agency is Classic Travel, which also allows travelers to book the Bellini Club rates online.

2. BOOK VIA VIRTUOSO

Several Belmond properties are members of Virtuoso. Virtuoso is not your classic hotel booking engine website. It’s the industry’s leading, invitation-only network of the world’s best luxury travel advisors, spanning over 26 countries and 9,000 travel advisors. So when you book a Belmond hotel via Virtuoso, most of the time, you will be in touch with a Virtuoso travel agent who will make the booking for you. There are some Virtuoso travel agencies though that offer an online booking tool, such as Classic Travel, which has an excellent website and is my overall preferred Virtuoso travel agency for booking a Belmond (or any other luxury) hotel.

Booking a Belmond hotel via Virtuoso instead of via the Belmond website has the following benefits:

  • The single best reason to book a Belmond hotel through a Virtuoso travel agent is that it means value for money as you’ll get access to complimentary VIP perks, such as room upgrade, flexible check-in and check-out times, daily breakfast and a resort, spa, or food credit (or something else). While the exact perks differ from hotel to hotel, they can easily be worth a few hundred dollars per night.
  • In most cases, the Virtuoso rate is identical to the Best Available Rate (BAR) found on the official Belmond website, which is a flexible rate that can be cancelled without penalty. For that reason, you’re leaving money on the table if you book a paid stay at the best available rate (BAR) via the Belmond website and not via Virtuoso.

It’s important to emphasize that early booking discount rates, special promotional packages, corporate rates, group rates, and other discounted rates do not qualify for Virtuoso benefits. Therefore, I always recommend to check the lowest rate on the Belmond website, and then weigh the pros and cons before deciding whether to book via Virtuoso (best available rate with free benefits) or not.

Also, although Virtuoso and the Belmond Bellini Club program seem to be identical (and are often offered by the same travel agents), they are not:

  • Virtuoso rates only apply to a selection of Belmond Hotels, while the Belmond Bellini Club program is applicable at all Belmond properties.
  • Virtuoso benefits can only be applied to Virtuoso rates (which is identical to the Best Available Rate, as explained above), while the Belmond Bellini Club program is applicable to all rates found on the Belmond website (including discounted and/or early bird rates).
  • The upgrades for rooms booked through the Belmond Bellini Club program are prioritized ahead of upgrades for hotel stays booked via Virtuoso.

3. BOOK VIA YOUR CREDIT CARD COMPANY

When you own an American Express credit card, you can book almost any Belmond hotel via Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts. This will offer you similar benefits as those offered via a Virtuoso travel agent:

  • Room upgrade upon arrival when available
  • Daily (continental) breakfast for two people
  • Guaranteed late 4pm check-out time
  • Noon check-in when available
  • A spa, food, and/or beverage credit (valued at a minimum of US$ 100 USD)

Holders of a Visa Signature credit card can also benefit from Virtuoso-like extra perks at most Belmond hotels & resorts when they make the booking via their credit card travel office and/or pay with their credit card. Contact your local VISA credit card company to find out whether they offer this travel service.

When you own a Citi Prestige Card (USA citizens only) you can make use of the fourth night free benefit: when you book a four night stay at a Belmond property, you get reimbursed the cost of the fourth night, minus any taxes and service fees. The fourth night benefit is calculated based on the average nightly rate of your complete stay. Reservations must be made through Thankyou.com or the Citi Prestige Concierge and you must pay for your stay with your Citi Prestige Card, ThankYou points, or a combination of the two.

4. BOOK VIA HOTELS.COM

Hotels.com – part of Expedia – is one of my favorite hotel booking websites, mainly for three reasons:

  • You collect credits towards free hotel nights via Hotels.com’s Rewards program. When you book and stay 10 nights at eligible hotels, you’ll get 1 night free to redeem at another. Hotels.com works out the average value of all the 10 nights you’ve collected and gives it back to you as a free night. All you need to do is make a free Rewards account and login into your account before making any bookings.
  • You can often apply 10% discount coupons. Unfortunately, almost all of the world’s major hotel chains are excluded from the list of hotels for which you can use a discount coupon (although I have been able to use discount coupons for booking Belmond properties in the past)
  • Hotels.com also has an excellent Best Rate Guarantee (BRG) program: if you find a cheaper price, Hotels.com will match that rate (and refund you the difference) after you submit an online BRG claim. The Hotels.com BRG is available only for exact itinerary matches, including property, room type, and dates of travel (as is the case with all other BRG programs). The BRG also includes an identical cancellation policy (which can make it harder for your BRG claim to be approved).

Those three advantages work very well when booking a stay at a Belmond hotel. As mentioned above, Belmond does not have a loyalty program, so you may as well book the room via Hotels.com instead of the official Belmond website so that you will get some of your money back in the end (by investing it towards free hotel nights).

It’s important to notice that Expedia is currently rolling out a new loyalty program – called One Key – which will replace the Hotels.com Rewards program. One Key launched in July 2023 in the United States, with other countries to follow later in 2024.

5. BOOK VIA THE BELMOND WEBSITE

Except for the Best Available Rates (BAR) – which are always best booked via a Virtuoso travel agent – it makes sense to check the Belmond website for the presence of any offers, packages or special deals. You can check these deals by clicking on the “offer” tab on the top of the home page of each Belmond hotel. Several types of deals are offered:

  • Single hotel package deals require a multi-day stay at one property and usually include a discount on the room rate and a few benefits such as airport transfers and complimentary wellness treatments.
  • Multi-hotel package deals are offered in destinations where Belmond manages multiple properties in close proximity to one another (e.g. Italy, Peru). The package deals usually offer a discounted stay when you visit multiple hotels during one itinerary in addition to complimentary transfers between the hotels and few other benefits (e.g. spa treatments).

That said, booking directly via the Belmond website is my least preferred method of booking, and here’s why:

  • The Belmond Bellini Club program is applicable to all rates found on the Belmond website (including single and multi hotel package deals).
  • Belmond doesn’t have a revenue based loyalty program, so you cannot earn credits with the company towards free hotel nights. The only way to make your stays at Belmond hotels count for some kind of loyalty scheme is by making the bookings via Hotels.com, where you can invest into a free hotel night for every ten nights booked (which can be spent at other Belmond hotels).
  • Most hotel brands offer a best rate guarantee: if you find a lower qualifying rate on the internet, the hotel will match the lower rate, and often throw in an additional discount. Unfortunately, Belmond does not offer a best rate guarantee (as they claim that they offer the lowest available rates anyway).
  • Never book a flexible ‘best available rate’ on the Belmond website. Once again, as explained above, you’re leaving money on the table if you book a paid stay at a Belmond hotel that is a Virtuoso member via the hotel website and not via Virtuoso, because you can’t receive Virtuoso benefits (such as breakfast, free upgrade, and a resort credit) by booking directly with the hotel.

IMHO, it’s utterly weird that Belmond isn’t rewarding loyal consumers who book directly via the company’s official website, but that you can score free stays at Belmond hotels by booking via Hotels.com or get very nice benefits at Belmond properties (as if you would have elite status) by booking through Virtuoso or your credit card company.
