Today: One&Only Kea Island, Greece, is now open

Just a 30-minute boat ride from Athens, Kéa Island is the Cyclades best-kept secret. With a permanent population of around 2,300 residents, this untouched gem is a favorite weekend getaway for Athenians, and the captivating location of ultraluxe One&Only Kéa Island, one of the most anticipated hotel openings of 2024.

Perched above a protected cove on the beautifully rugged west coast, One&Only Kéa Island promises discretion, seclusion, and authentic Aegean living in its purest form. The second Greek resort for the ultra-luxury brand, it follows the successful opening of One&Only Aesthesis on the Athenian Riviera in November 2023. With direct speedboat transfers available between the two resorts, they will form a bucket-list itinerary for the upcoming European summer.

An exceptional all-villa resort and exclusive community of Private Homes, One&Only Kéa Island invites romantics, wellness seekers and city dwellers to connect with the revitalising effects of the Mediterranean lifestyle. Guests can savor local, seasonal ingredients in the airy restaurants and bars, and explore Kéa’s natural and cultural wonders via curated experiences. Grounded in the elements, the One&Only Spa is a holistic haven offering exclusive wellbeing rituals and immersive programmes crafted by Subtle Energies.

To drive the opening, One&Only has appointed Jerome Colson as General Manager. Drawing on over 20 years’ hospitality experience and more than 10 years with the brand, Colson brings unrivalled passion and expertise to the fore. “I am thrilled to be leading the opening of this extraordinary resort. There is something very special about Kéa, and we are committed to honouring that in a way that is true to the island and its people. From our curated experiences and world-class diving opportunities to the vibrant local cuisine, the resort is a celebration of the Aegean lifestyle and Kéa’s authentic agrarian roots.”

Accommodation

Designed by acclaimed architect John Heah, the resort’s 63 cliffside villas have been arranged to maximise privacy, while showcasing panoramic views over Kéa’s dramatic landscapes and the Aegean Sea. Offering a choice of one or two bedrooms, these contemporary retreats feature locally sourced white marble, curved atriums, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing endless sea views. The light-filled interiors flow to outdoor terraces, where private infinity pools and fireplaces promise elevated alfresco living.

Crafted for families or groups of friends, the Two-Bedroom Cliff Villas can accommodate up to four adults and two children. Exceptional features include two marble-clad ensuites, a kitchenette for in-villa entertaining, and a dining area on the sun-bathed terrace.

On the opposite side of the bay is a limited collection of 40 One&Only Private Homes, now available to purchase. Inspired by modern Greek design, these exclusive freehold villas offer a choice of one to six bedrooms, with layouts spanning 180–3,020 square metres. Set on plots of land measuring up to 7,130 square metres, they offer seamless indoor-outdoor living, with gardens, dining terraces, and cliffside swimming pools surrounded by sunken daybeds. One&Only Private Homeowners enjoy exceptional privileges, including exclusive benefits at Kerzner properties worldwide and access to the resort facilities right on their doorstep.

Restaurants & bars

One of the most fertile islands in the Cyclades, Kéa’s agrarian roots stretch back thousands of years. Drawing inspiration from these rich culinary traditions, the resort’s restaurants and bars showcase seasonal ingredients and local producers. Echoing the lively ambience of an authentic village piazza, Atria promises flavourful Greek cuisine in a convivial atmosphere, served within the airy dining room or on the sea-view terrace.

By day, Kosmos lobby bar welcomes guests for elevated Afternoon Tea with a Greek twist; as night falls, it is the place to be for sunset drinks under the vast open skylight. Overlooking the resort’s mirage-like main pool and the shimmering Aegean Sea, Kaiki serves relaxed bites and drinks throughout the day. Èpicora wine bar is a sophisticated setting for artisanal cheeses, local charcuterie, and an array of Greek and international wines, with intimate tastings led by the sommelier.

Hidden behind a secret door and with seating for just 20 guests, dark and discrete Incognito is a Cuban-accented speakeasy bar that boasts a collection of rare whiskies and rums, refined cocktails, and a humidor of vintage cigars.

Wellness and recreation

Creating an unrivalled wellness destination in the Cyclades, the resort will also be home to an exceptional newOne&Only Spa. In partnership with Subtle Energies, the three-storey spa is rooted in the notion of sophrosyne (sof-ros-i-nee), the ancient Greek expression for balancing mind and body. The seafront sanctuary will offer signature treatments crafted exclusively for One&Only Kéa Island, inspired by Greek mythology and the healing benefits of natural active ingredients. The wellness retreat will also offer intensive programmes designed to reset and re-energise, rejuvenating beauty rituals grounded in the Aegean elements of earth and water, an indoor-outdoor fitness centre, a sea-view yoga pavilion, and watsu therapy.

Nearby, the cliffside Club Oneoffers inspiring activities for all ages with tennis and padel courts, bicycles and a dedicated teens’ area, complete with a half-size basketball court. For junior travellers, KidsOnly promises a fascinating programme of creative classes and outdoor activities inspired by Kéa’s iconic shipwrecks. Little ones aged four to 12 can engage with the treasures of the deep via storytelling, scavenger hunts, and enlightening experiences that focus on sustainability and the island’s unique flora and fauna.

Authentic Island Experiences

The resort’s experiences celebrate the natural and cultural wonders of Kéa, with bespoke adventures across land and sea. As the closest Cycladic island to Athens, Kéa’s waters are a magnet for yachts in the region. Situated on the resort’s tranquil bay, Bond Beach Club brings unrivalled glamour and energy to the island, with a star-studded calendar of guest DJs, a vibrant menu of locally sourced ingredients, elevated cocktails, and one-of-a-kind culinary experiences on the water’s edge.

Just offshore, some of the Mediterranean’s most renowned diving sites await. Experienced technical divers can follow the resort’s expert team to four historic wrecks and protected marine parks that surround Kéa, while beginners can master the craft of scuba diving in the calm waters of the bay. Above the waves, sail to one of the island’s spectacular secluded beaches, accessible only by boat.

Guests can also delve into the culture and history of Kéa with lively Panigiri celebrations at the resort, archaeology sessions within the grounds, cycling to Agios Nikolaos Lighthouse, or hiking to the ancient ruins of Karthea, where the temples of Athena and Apollo and a grand amphitheatre offer a fascinating insight into the island’s heritage. In the hillside town of Ioulida, wander through the picturesque village to discover jewellery boutiques, art galleries, and stores selling artisanal local produce.

Conveniently situated among the city’s iconic heritage shrines and palaces, Six Senses Kyoto invites guests to both an epicenter and an escape, to enjoy holistic wellness, signature sustainability and out-of-the-ordinary experiences. The hotel’s design draws inspiration from the Heian period (794-1185), when Heian-kyo (now Kyoto) was the capital of Japan, considered by many the golden age of art and culture that gave birth to “Miyabi” (courtly elegance) concept. This heritage is reflected in the hotel’s modern interpretation, incorporating elements of traditional arts to create a unique and elegant ambiance. The lobby artwork sets the tone with a folding screen featuring 504 hand-crafted Kyoto-made Rakuyaki tiles.  The design narrative extends to the 81 guest rooms and suites, offering a sanctuary for contemplation. Inspired by Kyoto’s Zen philosophy, Six Senses Spa integrates traditional healing techniques with modern science. Guided by the Eat With Six Senses ethos, the hotel’s food and beverage offering take guests on a journey through the ancient Japanese calendar.

Every aspect of the resort’s design has been carefully considered, putting guests’ well-being at its heart, from abundant light and space to using natural and repurposed materials for the interiors. Featuring three restaurants, two bars, a bakery and destination dining that incorporates the Eat With Six Senses ethos, Six Senses La Sagesse menus are inspired by Caribbean and South American cuisine while keeping well-being in mind. The spa is designed to leverage the abundance of fragrant spices with medicinal healing properties, along with local community knowledge, age-old traditions, and indigenous plants and herbs, to create innovative wellness programs that focus on sleep, movement, yoga, and longevity.

Today: Aman Resorts launches luxury yacht cruising

Aman – one of the world’s most exclusive hotel brands – has announced its first ultra-luxury yacht – Aman at Sea –  set to launch in 2027. In a joint venture with Cruise Saudi, Aman signed the ship building contract with T. Mariotti S.p.A, an Italian shipbuilder based in Genoa, Italy, who is known for setting new benchmarks in ultra-luxury ship building.

True to the pioneering ethos of the brand, Aman is directing the entire development process of the project. Aman and Cruise Saudi announced the appointment of T. Mariotti to deliver their vision for a pioneering superyacht, ensuring the ultra-luxury vessel mirrors the level of detail and care experienced across Aman’s hotels. The building of Aman at Sea will showcase the valuable knowledge and expertise of T. Mariotti’s fine Italian craftsmen and contractors such as electrotechnical specialists Ortec Santamaria and luxury yacht outfitters De Wave Group, who will bring to life the vision of appointed designers SINOT Yacht Architecture & Design. The ship will be built under Lloyd’s Register class.

Mariotti says – “We are proud that Aman Group has trusted and selected our shipyard for this pioneering project representing the first and true convergence between an ultra-luxury ship and a private yacht: undoubtedly creating a new category of vessel and the first with dual fuel technology (marine gasoil and green methanol, note).”

Speaking about the appointment of T. Mariotti, Chairman and CEO of Aman Group, Vlad Doronin commented: “With 35 hotels, resorts and branded residences across 20 destinations, Aman at Sea marks a new direction for the brand and the chance to bring Aman’s exceptional design, which is integral to the brand’s ethos, into an entirely new setting. We take pride in working with those who are best in class for their industry and in partnering with T. Mariotti, it enables us to fulfill our strategic vision of bringing the spirit of Aman to the world’s oceans, reframing luxury hospitality and creating a whole new category in on the water discovery. The signing of the shipbuilding contract is a significant milestone for Aman Group and an exciting moment in our esteemed partnership with T. Mariotti.”

Coinciding with the celebration to mark the signing of the shipbuilding contract with T. Mariotti, Aman announced the appointment of Jonathan Wilson as Chief Executive Officer of Aman at Sea. Jonathan will lead the development and implementation of Aman’s first luxury superyacht, working closely with Chairman and CEO, Vlad Doronin, to deliver the brand’s vision.

At 183 meters (600 ft), the vessel will be the first dual fuel powered new build, using marine diesel oil and methanol to run, showcasing Aman Group’s commitment to sustainability while offering a one-of-a-kind experience on the water. Today: February 2024 luxury travel news

Every last Friday of the month, you can read my news round-up of what’s happening in the world of luxury travel. In this issue:

1. &Beyond launches expedition yacht in the Galapagos Islands

Conservation-led luxury travel company &Beyond (one of my favorite hotel brands) has announced the extension of its South America portfolio with the launch of an expedition yacht in the Galapagos Islands. Named the &Beyond Galapagos Explorer, the 38 m (124 ft) yacht will operate on two 7-night routes in the east and west of the famed Galapagos Islands. Boasting just six suites and cabins, the yacht will cater for a maximum of 12 guests, with two expert guides present on each departure. In addition to the highest level of guiding, the vessel will also offer beautifully appointed spacious indoor and outdoor guest areas, as well as four exquisite cabins and two luxury suites. The &Beyond Galapagos Explorer will set sail on its first departure on 17 June 2024. Situated on the equator, the Galapagos consists of 18 main islands, three smaller islands, and 107 rocks and islets. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1878, the islands are home to a remarkable variety of flora and fauna, with many species found nowhere else on earth. Notable species include the Galapagos giant tortoise, marine iguana, and blue-footed booby.

Mere minutes from the 101 area, this 86-key luxurious retreat aims to offer a unique blend of city energy and serene elegance. Conceived by André Fu Studio, the hotel’s concept of a ‘modern mansion’ was birthed out of André’s personal reflection of Taipei – a modern city that juxtaposes between a world of vibrancy and poetic locality. 3. Etihad Airways introduces new luxury amenities across all cabins

Etihad Airways has launched a new collection of amenity kits and loungewear created in partnership with renowned Italian design house, Giorgio Armani, and luxury wellbeing brand ESPA. In addition, the UAE’s national airline has introduced a range of complimentary tote bags for guests on longer flights in Economy.

  • Etihad’s new Business Class amenity kits, designed by Giorgio Armani, come in two unisex styles – a clutch bag and a cube. The co-branded Giorgio Armani and Etihad unisex clutch bag features “The Dunes”, a contemporary print design drawing inspiration from the rolling sands of the stunning Liwa desert in Abu Dhabi. Following the flight, the bags can be used to conveniently store small tech products, cables, or personal items for convenience on the go. The kits are filled with luxury ESPA skincare products including lip balm, face mist, and body lotion, alongside convenient gifts including plush slippers, an eyeshade, earplugs and a travel dental kit.

The large folio bag comes packed with goodies from ESPA.
  • The Residence and First Class guests are also gifted bespoke Giorgio Armani and Etihad loungewear and slippers, beautifully presented in the large Giorgio Armani folio bag. The charcoal loungewear is soft to the touch, anti-wrinkle, and features a Henley neckline and bespoke tonal print inspired by the modern Abu Dhabi skyline, as well as matching trousers with pockets. The fashionable tote comes in three collectible designs featuring the tailfin designs of Etihad’s iconic aircraft livery. Each bag is made from a 500ml PET bottle rescued from landfill. Packing the inflight amenities in the reusable bag also removes further single use plastics that would normally be used to pack the items individually.

4. Etihad Airways enables pilots to fly both A350 and A380 aircraft

After successfully obtaining rigorous regulatory approvals and completing thorough pilot training, Etihad has achieved the qualification for its pilots to seamlessly operate both Airbus A350 and A380 aircraft interchangeably. This milestone positions Etihad as one of the pioneering airlines globally to attain such versatility in its pilot capabilities. Airline pilots are typically restricted to flying only one aircraft type. However, under certain conditions such as high similarity of flight deck, pilot procedures, and the implementation of special training, pilots may be enabled to operate two similar aircraft types through a dedicated programme approved by the aircraft manufacturer and the Civil Aviation Authority, known as ‘Mixed Fleet Flying’ or ‘MFF’. Over the past decade, Etihad has obtained similar approvals to qualify its Airbus pilots to interchangeably fly the A320 and A330 types, A330 and A340 types, and its Boeing pilots to fly the 777 and 787 types, setting new standards for fleet commonality. Building on this legacy, the latest approval to fly both the Airbus A350 and A380 will further enhance the efficiency and flexibility of Etihad’s widebody network.

5. Iberia unveils sustainable amenity kits

Iberia has unveiled new toiletry bags designed by Teresa Helbig, inspired by her uniforms for Iberia and which will be available in Business and Premium Economy class on long-haul flights starting this summer. The bags’ design combines blue, red, and yellow. The sustainable toiletry bags include new natural and vegan cosmetic products, made entirely in Spain by Uvas Frescas, using surplus grapes from the wines selected by the Wine Club (Araex) and served on board Iberia flights, and with packaging made from sugar cane with I’m Green TM certification. They were produced by Kaelis by recycling 7.5 million 550ml plastic bottles, saving 1.2 million litres of water and reducing energy emissions by 70%. Additionally, these sustainable products are packaged by Envera, the Iberia employee association for parents of people with disabilities, which employs more than 400 people with disabilities. The Business Class toiletry bag includes, in addition to cosmetics, a pair of night socks, an eye mask, a toothbrush and toothpaste, earplugs, lip balm and hand cream. The bag that will be given to Premium Economy customers will include socks, a mask, a toothbrush and toothpaste, and earplugs.

FOUR SEASONS RESORT BORA BORA

Guests of the buyout will also have exclusive and unfettered access to the Resort’s facilities, services, and amenities, including:

  • All meals at four open-air restaurants, as imagined by Executive Chef Sebastien Fontes
  • Wines selected by Head Sommelier Aude Vaillard and cocktails crafted by the Resort’s bartending team

  • Cultural classes guided by Cultural Ambassador Samuel Fiu and other local experts

Priced at EUR 2.5 million, the complete island buyout is subject to availability.

Optional customizable inclusions, such as private and chartered international and domestic air, helicopter excursions, and headline entertainment are also available at additional cost.

“There is nothing more exclusive than a complete island buyout and no destination as special as French Polynesia, rich in culture and tradition,” says Romain Chanet, General Manager of Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora. “For guests looking to treat their special group to the ultimate and most private experience in paradise, all executed with renowned Four Seasons service and warmth – this is absolutely it.”

In 2022, I stayed at the Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, my favorite hotel on the island of Bora Bora. Wrapped by majestic views, the resort is surrounded by sand-fringed islets on an outer coral reef that enclose a turquoise lagoon. The hotel offers 115 spacious hideaways with 108 overwater bungalows and 7 enormous beachfront villa estates, all overlooking the lagoon’s crystal clear waters and some with spectacular views of Mount Otemanu, French Polynesia’s sacred mountain. Inspired by local architecture, all guest accommodations offer a restful, airy ambience; complete with traditional teak wood furnishings, high ceilings and thatched roofs made from pandanus leaves. Distinctive touches include the fragrance of vanilla and the texture of black pearls in the spa, alfresco dining overlooking Bora-Bora’s famed lagoon, and signature Four Seasons service at every turn.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection unveiled its summer 2025 itineraries across its fleet, EvrimaIlma, and Luminara, marking an exciting moment as the company opens bookings for the inaugural season of its third superyacht. 4. One&Only One Za’abeel opens in Dubai

The first-ever urban resort from the ultra-luxury hospitality brand, One&Only One Za’abeel is where Dubai’s visionary allure and traditional hospitality converge. A captivating duality, the vertical masterpiece offers spacious accommodation, epicurean journeys, arts and culture experiences, and wellness programmes to residents and luxury travellers alike. The iconic destination, located in the One Za’abeel development by acclaimed architects Nikken Sekkei, is a direct reflection of the luxury resort’s dualistic nature, boasting dual skyscrapers which are dramatically intersected by the world’s longest cantilever, The Link – a futuristic boulevard featuring unparalleled dining experiences floating 100 m (328 ft) above the street. Setting an incomparable standard of seclusion and exclusivity in keeping with One&Only’s overarching philosophy, One&Only One Za’abeel’s expansively spacious rooms, suites and fabulous penthouse are amongst the largest that the city of Dubai has to offer.  Masterfully designed by Jean-Michel Gathy, the interiors draw inspiration from the surrounding Za’abeel location.

5. South African Airways resumes flights to Perth, Australia

South African Airways announced the return of its flights to Perth, Australia. CEO of SAA, Professor John Lamola, says SAA’s operations to Perth are in line with the airline’s strategic plans to scale its operations to a profitable level by leveraging SAA’s unique capabilities as a national carrier with wide-body aircraft that can provide South Africa with long-haul intercontinental air connectivity. The Perth route marks the second interoceanic route to be reopened within 6 months of the successful launch of the Sao Paulo, Brazil route on 31 October 2023.  Flights (SA 280) depart  Johannesburg 3 times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays at 20h55 and arrive at Perth the following day at 12h20.  Flights from Perth (SA 281) are scheduled 3 times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and depart at 14h40, arriving the same day at 19h35 in Johannesburg. For the launch phase of the route, SAA will operate an Airbus A340 – 300, with a total seat capacity of 253 (38 business class seats and 215 economy seats).

6. Brussels Airlines introduces new uniforms

At a fashion show for staff and press, the new Brussels Airlines’ uniforms were presented to the world. The new uniforms are dark navy blue with champagne-colored details. The collection is inspired by glamorous airline uniforms from the sixties, resulting in contemporary yet timeless silhouettes, hence the introduction of the turtleneck and the A-line dress. From BCI-certified cotton, mulesing free wool for animal welfare, innovative materials such as leather from cacti and grapes to the packaging: the materials used for the uniforms represent a big step forward in the sustainability strategy of Brussels Airlines.  Together with the new uniform, Brussels Airlines has also updated its style guide. Hair, make up and jewelry guidelines will no longer be different for men and women. There is no difference in gender for the hair style neither, as soon as it touches the shoulders, it needs to be tied up or in a bun, this is a safety related instruction. And lastly, tattoos can now also be shown as long as they comply with certain rules, such as the position, the size and what it represents.

Waldorf Astoria Doha West Bay is now open

With an ideal location close to the city centre and key attractions, the new Waldorf Astoria Doha West Bay epitomizes modern luxury – offering elegant furnishings, a range of culinary options, a four-floor wellness experience and seamless, personalized service. With a façade and main entrance almost identical to the original Waldorf Astoria in New York, the hotel nods to the brand’s rich heritage and legacy, bringing Manhattan flair to Qatar’s capital. The 44-story property features 283 rooms and suites, as well as 50 luxury apartments – all of which boast a distinct art deco style. Paying homage to the history of grand clocks at Waldorf Astoria properties around the world, the central feature of the lobby is a striking clock created by Tiffany & Co. A piece of art, the clock celebrates the falcon – Qatar’s national bird  – with a bezel inspired by the tips of a falcon’s feathers. Stretching from the 39th to the 43rd floor, the Waldorf Astoria Spa has a unique range of wellness experiences, all with beautiful views of Qatar’s skyline.
